Society today is at an interesting point. Information is only a click away, we are bombarded by streams of data to process everywhere you turn! I can pretty much find out about anything or any public figure that tickles my fancy in mere moments. We are such a super-productive society!! Oh wait, no we aren’t… It seems that we are also in an era of being lackadaisical. Laziness and mediocrity both at home and at work seem par for the course these days. Kids don’t play outside anymore and just enough work to get the job done seems to be the order of the day, but is this the biblical model for work and play? No…
This is another topic that Scripture is not quiet on. There are many teachings that demonstrate how a Christian should undertake anything that they do – including work!
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. (1Co 10:31 NET)
And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Col 3:17 NET)
Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately. (2Ti 2:15 NET)
As Christians we do many things that can easily be perceived as for self. Working, playing, and studying all appear to be things that we do to improve ourselves in some manner, and this is of course true, but the important question is in what manner do we do these things.
There are many ways to study, we can thoroughly consume the material and do well or we could read just enough to get by. There are numerous ways to play, we could get involved in a sport, practice a lot and improve, or we could cheat when nobody is looking.
Certain ways bring glory to God, certain ways do not. As Christians we are to bring glory to God in everything that we do, so whatever you do, do your best!
